Aaron Windler is Mountain Pointe's choice as its next boy basketball coach, Mountain Pointe athletic director Ian Moses said  Monday.

Moses said Windler will be announced as coach today, pending board approval at Tempe Union High School District's governing board meeting on April 18.

"He's the guy," Moses said. "It was a rewarding and a tiring process. We had several very good candidates, but Aaron was the one we felt best to continue the success of our program that (former coach) Brian (Fleming)  helped establish."

Windler, resigned at Chaparral last fall just prior to the start of the 2011-2012 season after three solid seasons piloting the Firebirds. He compiled a 60-28 record, taking Chaparral to two 5A-II state title games where the Firebirds finished runner-up in both in excruciating fashion in 2010 and 2011. In his first season in 2009, Chaparral reached the 4A-I semifinals.

"I wanted to get back into coaching, but had a short list in mind," Windler said. "I really liked what I heard from (principal) Bruce Kipper and Ian Moses. I like the demographics and the community. This is  one of the schools that appealed to me."

Windler will have a good nucleus returning from last year's club that reached the round of 16 and the quarterfinals the year before that.

"With Khari Holloway, Jalen Brown, Austin Witherill and Kenny Lacy, it's a group similar to what Corona del Sol had this past year," Windler said. "The school has never been to a final four, so that will be a goal."

Prior to coming to Chaparral, Windler coached at another Scottsdale high school, Coronado. Windler has taught social studies the last four years at Chaparral. Windler replaces Fleming, who resigned earlier this month after five seasons leading the Pride and 17 years overall in the Tempe district.
