No. 6 Cienega beat No. 18 Buena 5-0 Thursday night at home to secure a 5A Sonoran title and a spot in the 5A state playoffs without having to survive the play-in phase set for Thursday, Feb. 8. The conference play-in tournament will be comprised of teams ranked 9-24 and the winners of the tournament will face the top eight teams based on rankings in first round action slated for Feb. 14. Buena should finish high enough to make the play-in tournament.

The match played even for a while but Cienega (10-1-1 in ranking games) scored first on a header from Kylie Krebs off of a corner kick in the 32nd minute and then Viviana Mireles placed a corner kick to Shania Walters in the 51st to go up 2-0.

Hazel Ramos scored in the 52nd, Mireles hit Krebs in the 68th and Walters touched to Elise Ala in the 78th for the 5-0 final. Buena (7-4-1) had several early opportunities but the Colts couldn’t connect.

Cienega is led in scoring by a couple of sophomores in Ramos and Krebs with Ramos putting in 16 goals and Krebs 15 but there is a good mixture of talent on the team according to head coach Tony Torres.

“My wife (Sou Moussa-Torres) has said this a lot,” Torres explained on his squad. “She says that the best teams are the ones that lead themselves and this team has led themselves all year later. It's been nice as a coach to know you don't have to be in control of everything. They are the owners of their own destiny. That's what makes this special.”
