The Phoenix Suns surprised one of Arizona’s venerable high school coaches Monday with a well-deserved honor.
Candice Gonzales, the 27-year coach of Mesquite’s girls basketball program, earned the 2025 Spirit of Cotton award, named after former Suns coaching legend Cotton Fitzsimmons. The award celebrates the leadership, dedication and community contributions of an Arizona high school basketball coach annually while helping guide student-athletes.
As part of the recognition, the Suns also award a $10,000 grant to the coach’s athletic program. In front of Mesquite High stands packed with students, Suns dignitaries attended a school midday rally to hand Gonzales one of the biggest prizes an Arizona prep coach can receive.
“What a surprise,” said Gonzales, whose family also was present. “What an amazing recognition and opportunity to be here right now with all of you and represent Cotton as well.”

Fitzsimmons passed away in 2004, but his wife, JoAnn, is helping keep his legacy alive.
