Nov. 2-3: Randolph Golf Course

 

Desert Edge junior Aaron Ramos won the Division II state championship by one stroke over Salpointe standout Trevor Werbylo (140-141).

Werbylo was leading 67-68 after the first round at the Randolph Golf Course in Tucson but several golfers took turns taking the lead on Tuesday when Ramos went 1-over on the 10th hole but back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th turned back the tide. He shot a bogey on 18th to make things interesting though.

Werbylo shot a bogey on the 17th hole which proved to be the difference. This was the second year in a row Werbylo finished runner-up.

"I feel I played pretty well today but I missed a few putts," Werbylo explained. "That's what it came down to."

Ramos improved from 36th two years ago to sixth last year before winning it all this year. Part of his success was qualifying for and playing in the U.S. Junior Amateur this summer.

"That was some of the best golfing I have ever experienced. It was amazing," Ramos explained. "I'm a better player for it."

Ramos didn't know he had won the state championship until he left the course.

"I knew I could shoot low numbers on this course," Ramos said. "But winning still hasn't hit me yet."

Campo Verde pulled off a stunner by defeating Salpointe by 12 strokes after being down 302-294 leading into the final day. The Coyotes finished in fifth place last year.

Salpointe was also the runner-up in 2011.
