Alexis Cortez has done what only a couple dozen others in the history of girl's basketball in Arizona have done. The Tucson guard/forward scored 35 points Thursday night against Cholla to put her in the 2,000-point club.
Cortez is averaging 22 points a game in her career and an incredible 35 ppg this year through nine games. At her current rate, the East Carolina recruit could break 2,500 points and finish in the top five of the Career Scoring List according to the Arizona Basketball Coaches Association.
The Badgers defeated Cholla 68-8 to improve their record to 8-1 while the Chargers fell to 0-4. Tucson is trying to get back to the state playoffs after coming up short to Maricopa in the second round last year.
"I've had incredible teammates and that has allowed me to achieve this goal," Cortez said. "But we want to win state and whatever happens for me happens. This was a blessing."
State-wide, Kingman senior Desirae Gonzalez has 1,845 career points and should break 2,000 points in a few weeks. Gonzalez signed with the University of Nevada, Reno.
