Softball: Hamilton, Desert Vista shine 1st day of Desert Mtn. Invite

Hamilton and Desert Vista's softball teams continued their high-level of play Tuesday each dominating two opponents on the first day of the 19th annual Desert Mountain Invitational at Horizon Park.

Both used strong pitching and plenty of hitting to post 2-0 records. Hamilton blanked Mountain Ridge and Mountain Pointe by scores of 12-0 and 11-0, respectively. Chey Noli and Madison Seigworth teamed up to shut out Mountain Ridge on three hits and Abby Anderson and Natalie Montgomery combined on a four-hitter of Mountain Pointe. Hamilton collected 29 hits in its two games. Kim Slaughter was 4-5 with 6 RBI -- 3 in each game. Taylor Gindlesperger had two hits and 3 RBI vs. Mountain Ridge and Ali Ashner was 3-3 with 2 RBI vs. Mountain Pointe. Hamilton is 11-2 overall, including a 6-1 showing last week at the Davd Kops Tournament of Champions Invite in Bullhead City.

Desert Vista, which has a pair of one-run losses and handed Canyon del Oro its only loss on Monday,, ran its overall record to 10-2 by avenging a loss to Desert Ridge with a 7-0 win. The Thunder followed that topping Chandler, 9-2. Mara Kemmer allowed three hits and fanned nine to beat Desert Ridge. Jackie Traghber notched the win over Chandler. Kemmer was 6-7 at the plate in the two games and Rion Simms 3-5 with 4 RBI.Tajiah Ellison was 3-3 vs. Chandler.

Sahuaro used solid pitching to nab its first two games, beating Cactus, 3-2, and Corona del Sol, 7-0. Lexy Coons earned the win over Cactus going the distance with eight strikeouts and driving in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Lauren Wedman' tossed a three-hitter in shutting out Corona del Sol. Wedman got home run support from Jasmin Lopez and Ashley Bradford. Bradford  had three hits against Corona. Chaparral picked up its wins over Basha (8-2) and Millennium (6-4).

Play continues Wednesday (March 16) beginning at 1 p.m. at Horizon Park. Horizon, Queen Creek, Pinnacle and Ironwood Ridge play their first games of the tournament today.
