Volleyball: Chandler Prep remains unbeaten

Chandler Prep got a fresh start to the third week of the volleyball season Tuesday night against Valley Christian, a solid team albeit one a bit wounded and aching from a three-set loss Monday night to undefeated Horizon Honors.

Chandler Prep offered little sympathy, putting a second successive sweep on Valley Christian to keep its record perfect intact by scores of 25-23, 25-21 and 25-18 at Chandler Prep. Chandler Prep, Valley Christian and Horizon Honors were three of the top teams last season in what was Division III. This year Chandler Prep, the D-III runner-up in 2015, and Horizon Honors are in 2A. Valley Christian is in 3A.

The victory ran Chandler Prep's record to 5-0 (all power-ranking matches) as it next prepares for a weekend tournament at Estrella Foothills. The Titans didn't need a lot of heavy lifting (precise play) as Valley Christian struggled to get in synch without one of its top hitters and passers, junior outside Cici Collins.

Collins tried playing through a nagging foot injury Monday, but by Tuesday she ended up with her foot in a boot and a doctor visit coming later this week. Regardless, Valley Christian did not play well enough to prevail, particularly in the final points of the first and second sets. The Trojans had opportunity to prevail in both.

"Lots of errors, too many mistakes," Valley Christian coach Lisa Gross said. "Not having Cici hurts, but having played last night we didn't have a chance to get in a practice and look at rotations. We'll have to figure some things out and see how she's doing going forward."

It wasn't a huge statistical night for anyone on either team. Chandler Prep senior MB-OH Taylor Sheppy finished with 13 kills, senior Leslie Cadien had eight digs and senior libero Hannah Weber had five digs. Sophomore setter Isabelle Miranda managed 20 assists.

Chandler Prep never trailed in the first set, leading between three and five points mot of the way. The Titans were caught at 23 after a hitting error and Valley Christian at the service line. The Trojans lost the set the next two points -- a hitting error and double hit.

The second set saw Chandler Prep up by as much as eight (15-7), but again Valley Christian managed to narrow the deficit to 22-21. Chandler Prep called time and VC followed up with a service error, a communication error that let a potential third hit fall to the floor and then a poor pass to finish the set.

Valley Christian (9-5 overall, 4-2 power-ranking matches) let a 7-2 lead slip away in the third set and found itself down 19-12 a short time later. That run by Chandler Prep was of its making. In that stretch the Titans piled up five kills, three blocks and two aces.

"We didn't play well at times, but overall I thought we were in control," Chandler Prep coach Sarah Baughman said. "The girls were confident enough even when we gave up some points. ....We're not where we want to be yet, but I feel like we are trending upward."

Valley Christian was led on the attack by junior outside Courtney Dyer and junior middle Alyssa Wissinger with 10 kills apiece. Dyer added 11 digs and Wissinger three blocks. Freshman setter Abigail Calicchio had 15 assists.
