No. 6 Tanque Verde fell to No. 11 Veritas Prep 1-0 in the first round of the girl’s 3A playoffs on Friday afternoon at Red Mountain Park in Mesa. The Hawks made it to the championship of the Division III playoffs last year and the team won the Region 7 championship this winter under second-year head coach Shana Olayvar.

Olayvar is now 26-8-2 at Tanque Verde.

On the boy’s side, Sahuarita stunned No. 2 Safford to advance to the 3A quarterfinals. Tied 2-2 after overtime, Sahuarita outlasted Safford 5-4 in the PK round.

The Mustangs were the last team to qualify in the D-III state championships last year and snuck in as an automatic qualifier this year, giving third year coach Louis Dachtyl three straight playoff appearances after only winning three matches the year before he arrived on campus.
