6A CONFERENCE
Rincon/University (3-5, 0-1) at TUCSON (3-5, 1-0)
To be played at Kino Stadium. Regardless of the outcome, the Badgers will face Yuma Cibola (3-5, 1-0) in the final week of the regular season for the 6A Southern Region title and the automatic playoff berth that goes with it. It looks like the region champion will be the only team from the region to qualify for the state tournament due to the low power rankings of all the teams.
Sunnyside (2-6, 1-1) at No. 5 SAHUARO (3-5, 1-2)
One of the last non-region games of the year, the Cougars still have a shot at the 5A state playoffs depending on how the power-rankings play out. Chances are very good the Cougars will be a 4A team next year with the Blue Devils playing in 5A.
5A CONFERENCE
Ironwood Ridge (6-2, 1-1) at CIENEGA (8-0, 2-0)
The 5A Southern Region is so stacked, it appears every week is called a “Game of the Year.” IF the Bobcats win this one, then the “Game of the Year” will be next week against Mountain View.
MOUNTAIN VIEW (7-1, 2-0) at Buena (4-4, 0-3)
The Colts could shake things up a bit with an upset but the Mountain Lions appear to be focused. A loss would still keep Mountain View in the region race but it might drop them out of the top eight where all teams want to finish.
Desert View (3-5, 0-2) at MARANA (6-2, 3-0)
The Tigers clinched the 5A Sonoran title last week but the power-point opportunities in the final two weeks of the regular season might not be enough to move them higher in the rankings.
Poston Butte (4-4, 1-1) at CHOLLA (4-4, 1-1)
The Phoenix media had the Broncos making the playoffs and the Southern Arizona media had the Chargers moving on. Expect Jordan Porter to put up impressive numbers.
Flowing Wells (2-6, 1-2) at 4A WALDEN GROVE (5-3, 1-2)
The Red Wolves are still in the playoff hunt for an at-large berth. Flowing Wells beat Desert View last week to shake up the 5A Sonoran race so the Walden Grove faithful better be prepared for a tough battle.
4A CONFERENCE
SALPOINTE (7-1, 2-0) at Catalina Foothills (6-2, 2-0)
Another “Game of the Year.” A Lancer victory, coupled with a Canyon del Oro loss, will give Salpointe the 4A Kino title. It will also solidify a super-ranking, keeping the team in the top four down the stretch. A “super-ranking” means hosting the first two rounds of the state playoffs.
Catalina Foothills wins the region outright with a victory because the Falcons have already beaten Canyon del Oro. A Falcon victory could move them into the top four.
CANYON DEL ORO (4-4, 1-1) at Nogales (2-6, 0-3)
The Dorados need Salpointe to beat Catalina Foothills to stay alive in the 4A Kino race. Then, the Falcons would need to lose to Walden Grove in the final week to set up a big game against Salpointe for the region title. That’s a lot of help needed but it all starts with holding up their end of the bargain with a win at Nogales.
PUEBLO (6-2, 2-0) at Palo Verde (3-6, 2-1)
The Warriors still control the 4A Gila Region but will have to wait until the final week to secure the region title. The Titans can also win the region if they beat Pueblo and Amphitheater loses twice.
AMPHITHEATER (2-6, 2-0) at Rio Rico (1-7, 0-2)
The Panthers can still win the 4A Gila Region. Crazy region race.
3A CONFERENCE
PUSCH RIDGE (8-0, 4-0) at Catalina (5-3, 2-2)
The Lions can clinch the 3A South Region title with a win. The Trojans are fighting for an at-large berth and a win here would be a power-point lottery for the program.
4A Douglas (0-8, 0-3) at SABINO (6-2, 4-1)
A non-region game but the Sabercats need to win here to avoid falling in the rankings. Every game is important.
Tanque Verde (2-7, 2-3) at EMPIRE (5-3, 3-1)
The Ravens need to win this to set up another “Game of the Year” scenario at Sabino in the final week. The winner of that game should take one of the two automatic state playoff berths awarded to the 3A South.
SAHUARITA (2-6, 0-4) at Santa Rita (0-7, 0-4)
The Mustangs should pick up their first region win of the year.
2A CONFERENCE
Benson (2-5, 1-2) at SANTA CRUZ (7-0, 3-0)
The Dust Devils will keep blowing through Southern Arizona and win here will give the team another 2A South title due to a better conference record over San Manuel and Willcox.
Bisbee (3-5, 1-2) at SAN MANUEL (6-2, 2-1)
The Miners are trying to keep pace with Santa Cruz and Willcox but they need to win this first.
Tombstone (0-8, 0-3) at WILLCOX (4-4, 2-1)
The Cowboys are looking to secure an at-large playoff berth, the first since 2012.
1A CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS
Saturday, Oct. 21
No. 10 Valley Union (5-3) at No. 7 RAY (5-3)
The Blue Devils lost to Ray 48-20 on Sept. 15. The team from Elfrida is the only program from Southern Arizona in the 8-man playoffs this year.
