For Scottsdale Christian Academy, the quarterback, kicker and punter all wear the same jersey. Grant Schreyer proved that playing all three positions is not only manageable but a key advantage for an Eagles team that has started the year 2-1.

Before falling to Valley Christian 38-21, the Eagles had started the year with 48-6 and 53-0 wins.

Schreyer has been a big part of the success with 376 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. He’s also tallied a 64% completion percentage with a quarterback rating of 129.

Having Schreyer handle the punting duties allows the team to line up in a regular offensive formation on fourth down and read the defense as to whether the Eagles want to punt or go for it.

“The defense has to be ready for both- if they want to guard against the offensive play, they will have to bring a returner up.” coach Jason Cauley said.

When the defense brings a returner up to guard the offensive play, it is letting go of the ability to return the punt. Schreyer can see this and decide to call for the punt.

In the first two wins of the season, all three of Schreyer’s punts were placed inside the 20.

Special teams coach Cal Newman called him a “California kid stuck in Arizona.” A leader by example and a player voted team captain, Schreyer has to find time in practices to work on both positions.

“During our pre-practice is when he kicks, so he gets limited amount of kicks in but he works on whatever we’re focusing on that day.” Newman said.

It’s not a problem for Schreyer, who played soccer before football.

“Honestly, no its not (a problem) because I have enough time for both and I’ll usually kick before and when we break it up for special teams.” Schreyer said.

When asked what position he likes better, Schreyer said, “Definitely quarterback” because “it’s more fun and there is more fame.”

Scottsdale Christian’s next game is Sept. 14 at home against Veritas Prep.
