Last season Campo Verde's and Casteel's girls soccer teams traded 2-1 victories. Casteel won in the regular season allowing it to win the 5A San Tan Region title. Campo bounced back the next time they met, scoring with about six minutes left to win the 5A state title.

The caliber of play remains high for both as they got around to playing again in their first region game of 2022.

Top-ranked Campo Verde scored twice in the last 10 minutes of regulation to force overtime and tallied on a free kick in overtime to take a 3-2 victory over #3 Casteel at Campo Verde High School. Neither team had a power-ranking match loss entering play on Wednesday. Campo Verde improved to 8-0-1 and Casteel is now 6-1.

It looked like it would be Casteel's day as the match wound down. The Colts led 2-0 thanks to goals in the 28th minute by Tori Brown (assist to Rylee Rustad) and the other in the 67th minute with Brown assisting leading scorer Nathalie Lewis in the 67th minute.

Campo Verde pressed the outcome in the 70th minute. The Coyotes had a slew of corner kicks throughout the match, but didn't convert until the 70th minute -- Rebekah Eicher scoring off a corner from Lexi Kreipke. Campo Verde tied it at 2 in the 78th minute. The Coyotes didn't score directly off a corner this time, but Mallory Miller knocked home a rebound in a goal-mouth scrum to force overtime.

The game-winner was notched in the first 10-minute overtime. With seven minutes gone, Casteel was called for a foul setting up a free kick from 30 yards out. Kreipke, last season's leading scorer for the Coyotes and again this year, kicked a bowling-ball like attempt on goal. The ball might have been slightly touched on its way, but found the back of the net through a myriad of players on both sides. Casteel keeper Ariel Bernard, perhaps blocked out briefly as Kreipke's kick rolled through, couldn't make the stop.
