Sunnyslope dropped a hard-fought, extra-inning battle to Liberty, 9–7, when the Lions scored three runs in the top of the eighth and held off a late push to secure the win.
In a game that featured constant momentum swings, the Vikings went up against one of Arizona’s top-ranked teams, matching Liberty inning for inning before ultimately coming up just short after a two-out rally by the Lions.
The contest included multiple lead changes, clutch hitting, and a dramatic seventh inning that sent the game into extras tied at 6-6. Liberty seized the opportunity in the eighth, capitalizing with three runs to create separation. Sunnyslope responded with a run in the bottom half and even brought the tying run to the plate, but was ultimately unable to complete the comeback.
Sunnyslope came out aggressive early, taking advantage of Liberty starting pitcher Brock Bowman’s control issues l. The Vikings plated three runs across the first two innings as Bowman issued three walks and hit a batter, allowing Sunnyslope to build an early cushion.
Liberty gradually worked its way back into the game, cutting the deficit to 3–2 through four innings before taking its first lead, 4–3, in the fifth.
The Vikings answered immediately in the bottom of the fifth, stringing together quality at-bats to score three runs and reclaim a 6–4 advantage heading into the sixth inning. The back-and-forth nature of the game continued as Liberty refused to go away.
Starting pitcher Lucas McFarland delivered a solid outing for Sunnyslope, keeping his team competitive throughout his time on the mound. The left-hander pitched four-plus innings, allowing four runs while walking two and striking out four.
“My fastball felt really good today,” McFarland said. “I just wish I could have gotten through the fifth and given my team a better chance to win the game, but all things considered, I’m not too upset.”
Despite McFarland’s effort, Liberty found ways to produce late, scoring once in both the sixth and seventh innings to even the score and force extra innings.
Center fielder Marley Jensen proved to be a difference-maker in the seventh inning. He delivered a clutch, game-tying single in the top half and followed it up with a crucial defensive play in the bottom half, throwing out a runner at home plate with the bases loaded to prevent a walk-off and extend the game.
“I knew it was going to have to be a near-perfect throw to get him,” Jensen said. “Luckily, it wasn’t hit too deep, so I was able to get under it and get my whole body into the throw.”
Despite the loss, head coach Kevin Woods praised his team’s resilience and competitiveness against a strong opponent.
“It was a great performance by all the guys today,” Woods said. “They’re a really good team over there, and our guys battled the whole game, so I’m proud of them regardless of how it turned out.”
Liberty will try to carry this momentum into its next game against Canyon View, while Sunnyslope will look to right the ship on Wednesday against Basha.
