Noah Soto leads CDO to 30-6 victory over Nogales

At first glance, one would think Canyon del Oro's 30-6 victory over Nogales was an easy one but the Dorados only outgained the Apaches by 75 yards, had only two more first downs and actually ran eight fewer offensive plays. The difference, according to Nogales head coach Kevin Kuhm, was the "little things."

A bad snap on an early Nogales punt attempt gave CDO a 2-0 lead with 10:33 left in the first quarter and another bad snap in the opening moments of the second quarter gave the Dorados the ball at the 18 yard line and they took it in for an easy score six seconds later.

Still again, a first-and-goal situation in the third quarter, with the game still undecided, quickly deteriorated to a fourth-and-goal situation at the 33 yard line.

"There was nothing huge," explained Kuhm. "It's the same things we've been trying to tell them. We aren't doing the little things. We played well at times on defense but we lacked discipline on offense and we need work on our kicking game."

For CDO, the offense looked disciplined more times than not with junior quarterback Noah Soto overcoming obvious jitters to put up 152 yards through the air and 63 yards on the ground. He only attempted ten passes and finished with a touchdown and an interception but he was efficient with the interception coming on a remarkable defensive play by Gabriel Norzagaray and the TD coming on a 46-yard pass to Crandall Cameron.

"Of course, not everything can be perfect," said Soto. "We've been working hard and we knew we could get this win if we played our game. We can work on all aspects but it was good to get this win."

Soto also had the benefit of having senior standout Max Smith in the backfield with him and Smith finished with 83 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Smith also pulled down 57 yards through the air.  The Soto-Smith duo will prove to be a difficult combination for defenses to handle.

CDO took the early 2-0 lead on the bad snap but Nogales went up 6-2 thanks to a 69-yard pass from Kevin Zuniga to Ricky Paredes four minutes later. The 2-point conversion failed.

Walker Padilla scored from six yards out to give CDO a 9-6 lead heading into the second quarter. Nogales had the second bad snap on a punt, setting up Smith's first score from 18 yards out to put CDO up 16-6 at the half.

Zuniga finished with 147 yards passing (6-22) and Freddy McCarthy had 79 yards rushing but the Apaches couldn't get more than a few plays together in what Kuhm called a failure to do the right things "over and over again."

Still, the game was still very much in doubt heading into the second half.

Soto opened things up and hit Cameron on the 46-yard score to put CDO up 23-6 with 8:22 left in the third but it looked like Nogales would score again after driving to the 10 yard line but three penalties helped move the ball backwards to the 33 where they gave up the ball on downs.

Smith would put the game away with a 2-yard run in the fourth to give CDO the 30-6 margin of victory.

CDO senior Kyle Larkin came up with two interceptions in the game, including a pick to end one last scoring threat from Nogales with Paredes under center. Thomas Sawyer added 34 yards receiving to Soto's total.

Romelo Bracy pulled down two touchdown passes but both were called back due to penalties.

For Nogales, Paredes finished with a game-high 92 yards receiving and Ben Jaimen added 51 yards rushing.

"We know we are achieving great things," Dustin Peace told his team after the game. "And we have great expectations."

Nogales (0-1) will visit Tucson High (0-1) next Friday. The Badgers lost to Sahuaro 13-10 in the other game featured by "Coaches for Charity."

CDO (1-0) will travel to Avondale Agua Fria (0-0). Agua Fria plays at Peoria (0-0) Friday night.
