St. Mary's bounces back to sweep Sierra Linda

St. Mary’s was able to bounce back this week against Sierra Linda, winning 9-0. St. Mary’s swept its opponents in all matches Tuesday, led by seniors Quentin Duran and Michael Fletez.
This is a huge change from last week, as St. Mary’s fell to Deer Valley 7-2 in a match that brought some unexpected wind, causing some issues for both Duran and Fletez.
“The wind speed last week was very unpredictable when we played Deer Valley,” Duran said.
Duran wasn’t affected by the heat Tuesday, as he was able to win his singles match in straight sets, winning 6-2 in both.
Fletez’s match was particularly exciting, going to a double tiebreaker after he clawed back from losing his first set and being down 5-4 in the second one. After making a second set comeback, Fletez was able to win the game after those two tiebreakers and come away with the victory.
“It’s a huge confidence booster coming back after a deficit,” Fletez said. “The heat today tired me out a lot, but it’s better than the wind we had last week. With wind you just don’t really know where the ball is going to be.”
Duran and Fletez were also victorious in their doubles match, still undefeated this season since pairing up last week.
“Since we’ve known each other for a long time our chemistry is good. We can trust each other. If I can’t get the shot then he can get the shot,” Fletez said.
“Playing tennis with each for four years has helped us out a lot,” Duran said. “ We know how each other play. It keeps tennis fun when you have someone you’ve known for such a long time as your partner.”
St. Mary’s hopes to continue its winning ways against powerhouse Arcadia on March 26.
