Homecoming is a magical time for high school students but for South Mountain football it was just another game.

Senior Captain, K’rashee Smith said, “it’s just 1-0 every week” and they are not “taking anyone lightly.” This mentality worked very well against their opponent Camelback High School.

The South Mountain Jaguars went up against the Camelback Spartans and came away with a win. Improving their undefeated home record to 3-0 and their overall record to 3-1.

Late in the fourth quarter senior Devontae Ingram found out that he had been named homecoming king, making him both a king on and off the field. The two-way player solidified their lead with an interception with only 28 seconds left in the second quarter. The veteran player gave the team a 21-point lead over their opponent at the end of the first half.

“We played as a team, we just did our Xs and Os, we practiced hard coming back from a loss. It was a great bounce back this week, just be ready for next week,” Ingram said.

South Mountain Football started slowly but picked up quick during the first two quarters of the game against Camelback. After giving up a touchdown on the first drive they quickly fell behind the Spartans, but this did not last for long.

After the touchdown to the Spartans they went and scored 28 unanswered points. Junior Edward Crocker gave the team a comfortable lead with an 80-yard touchdown making the score 21-6.

The Spartans gained momentum with answering back with a touchdown and faking a two-point conversion making the score 28-14.

The Jaguars came into the second half with a commanding lead of 35-14 but continued to pile on the points. They established the running game in the first drive with Smith rushing for 73 yards.

On the Jaguars following drive they rushed for approximately 30 yards and scored another touchdown increasing their lead to 50-14.

Because of the large lead South Mountain was able to put in their non-starters five minutes into the third quarter. “They [the starters] are actually playing to get them in. That’s just a testament of our team, how unselfish they are, how much they care about one another. So, you got guys in the sidelines cheering when the other guys are scoring,” Coach Mark Carter said. “It’s a beautiful thing. I love this football team.”

The Spartans kept fighting till the end of the game but fell short to the Jaguars 64-28. This high scoring game went almost three hours but because of South Mountain’s large roster they were able to keep up their intensity through the entirety of the game.

South Mountain football will travel to North Canyon High School for its next game. During practice upcoming week the team plans to work on fundaments. Smith shared that he wants to work on “being a little more patient and wait for my blocks to open up.” But they are also going to stick with their current process. “Same thing, we just need to get in and get focused, prepare for next week and go 1-0 again,” Smith said.
