Coming off a lossThursday to Veritas Prep, Phoenix Country Day faced American Leadership Academy at home Friday.

ALA, ranked seventh in 3A, came in 10-1 primed to spoil Blue & Gold Night, the team's annual tradition to give back to the community.

But PCDS (10-3) spoiled ALA's night, 3-1.

“We wanted to win this one, especially on our home court on Blue & Gold,” said sophomore Lilly Robinson.

Said coach Kat Glaeseman: “I think yesterday’s match really prepared us for the tall girls and the high-speed game we were going to play tonight.”

The Eagles lost the first set 25-22 but rallied to win the next three.

“We needed to stay level headed,” junior Hannah Drewitz said. “Everyone’s watching and we played a tough team so it is easy to get in your head.”

The Eagles had a large turnout, something they are getting used to.

“Our setter Lilly Robinson took the energy from the crowd and brought it to her game and put the whole team on her back, especially behind the service line,” said Glaeseman.

Robinson had a streak of seven serves in the last set to help the Eagles pull away from the Patriots.

“Usually I’m not as consistent with serving in that spot as I did, I guess the whole team kept me going and that helped out a lot,” said Robinson.

As the season is coming to an end, the Eagles are starting to play with the mindset that it is time to get ready for playoffs.

“We switched up our lineup a little bit so we have bigger blockers at the net because we know were going to see bigger, tougher, faster teams so we shifted some players,” said Glaeseman.

The Eagles are not used to the change but are working to adjust.

“It is hard to adjust to a change in the lineup but we’ve played really well with it,” said Robinson.

The Eagles have four more games and play North Valley Christian on Tuesday at home.
