Kersting unseats Hicks in diving at Division II state meet

Campo Verde's Marlee Kersting turned in the top dive score of the day (D-I or D-II) and won the Division II girls diving titlle Friday at the Division I and Division II state swim and dive meet at Skyline Aquatic Center.

Kersting, a junior, posted a final score of 436.80 to best last year's D-II champ, Rachael Hicks of Sunrise Mountain. Hicks totaled 412.05 points. Campo Verde's Kylie Fonseca (402.35) was third, Notre Dame's Madeline Russell (349.30) fourth and Phoenix Country Day's Maddie Stern (339.85) fifth.

In the Division II swimiming prelims two boys and one girl recorded top times in both their individual events. Salpointe's Tyler Mattingly was tops in the 200 free and 500 free. Arcadia's Nathan Anderson showed best in the 200 IM and 100 fly. Verrado freshman Amy Bilquist secured the top times for the girls in the 50 free and 100 back.

Other boys with top prelim times in individual events were Notre Dame's Jack Poupore (50 free), Douglas' Brandon Yooung (100 breast), Cortez's Max Montour (100 back) and Salpointe's Jojo Simonson (100 free).

Other girls with top prelim times were Phoenix Country Day's Danielle Lee (200 free), Phoenix Country Day's Jaimie Bryan (200 IM), Notre Dame's Samantha Getzen (100 fly), Arcadia's Carley Stevens (500 free), Valley Christian's Briana Jurries (100 breast) and Tanque Verde's Carly Wilson (100 free).

Division I and Division II swimming finals are set for Saturday at noon. Division I boys diving is at 9:45 a.m. followed by Division II boys diving at 1:45 p.m.
