November 8, 2011 by Don Ketchum, AZPreps365

NOTE: This football playoff preview primarily covers the area from north Scottsdale west through Phoenix, the southwest and northwest Valley. By Don Ketchum Football quarterfinals in divisions I, II and III will be held Thursday night at 7, and here is a brief look at teams from this area . . . In Division I, No. 2 seed Phoenix Brophy Prep puts its 11-0 record on the line when it faces No. 7 Chandler Basha (8-3) at Brophy’s Phoenix College home field. No. 6 Phoenix Pinnacle (9-2) faces a big test when it travels to Ahwatukee to lock up with Phoenix Desert Vista (10-1). Desert Vista’s only loss came on Oct.6, when it fell to Chandler Hamilton, 35-10. In Division II, top-seeded former Class 5A Division II champion Scottsdale Chaparral (11-1) meets No. 8 Gilbert Perry (9-2). Chaparral has perhaps the deepest team of any in the state, regardless of division. One of the best games of the night figures to be No. 5 Peoria Centennial (10-1) at No. 4 Glendale Deer Valley (10-1). Deer Valley gave Centennial its only loss, 14-7 on Oct. 14. Deer Valley’s lone loss came when Glendale Ironwood won a wild one, 69-68, on Oct. 21. In Division III, No. 9 seed Phoenix Thunderbird (8-3) the Class 4A Division II champion, has a tough obstacle to get past when it visits No. 1 seed Tucson Sabino (10-1). Sabino’s only loss came against Vail Cienega, 17-16, in the season opener. No. 5 Scottsdale Saguaro (9-2), the winner in Class 4A Division I, goes on the road to play No. 4 Queen Creek (10-1). Saguaro is led by all-everything D.J. Foster, who scored 10 touchdowns in a first-round win over Peoria Sunrise Mountain. Queen Creek’s only loss came to Tucson Catalina Foothills, 28-17, on Sept. 30. No. 6 Nogales (10-1), its only loss coming to Tucson Salpointe 45-0 on Oct. 14, will try to avoid a similar fate when it travels to face a Glendale Cactus team (9-1) that always seems to be in the thick of things. And No. 7 Phoenix Arcadia (9-2) will travel to face No. 2 Peoria Liberty (10-1). Liberty’s only loss came Oct. 20, 53-34, to Cactus. The Lions have continued to build a strong program over the last few years.
