The 54th Annual Flowing Wells Wrestling Invitational featured 68 state medalists, 12 individual champions and three team champions with Liberty (D-I), Sunnyside (D-II) and Walden Grove (D-III) taking part. Additionally, four of the top five D-I teams and three of the top four D-II teams from 2019 also competed.

Liberty won the team title for the first time in program history and the defending D-I champions did it by knocking off Sunnyside, the defending D-II champions, 308.5 to 256.5. The Blue Devils have 30 Flowing Wells championships dating back to 1974 including 2018 and 2019.

As an emerging sport, there are no team champions on the girl’s side, but Kofa standout Carolina Moreno was named “Top Wrestler” along with Safford senior Robert White.

The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) recognition for the Arizona Assistant Coach of the Year for 2018-2019 was awarded to Brian Popadak of Desert Vista and the Arizona Coach of the Year recognition was awarded to Victor Gonzalez of Walden Grove.

Chandler senior Stefana Jelacic has multiple national titles and a Junior Pan Am Gold Medal to her name to go along with the first-ever AIA state championship in the 118-pound division last year. She wrestled on the boy’s side at Flowing Wells Saturday and took sixth in the 115 class.
