Chandler turns back determined Brophy

Chandler High and Brophy Prep accomplished some things Thursday night.

Both got to see things they needed for later in the season. But only one couid come away with the victory at Austin Field and the W went to the host Wolves.

Chandler fought off a third-quarter surge by Brophy with a similar fourth quarter that turned the tables and produced a 43-29 victory in a 5A Fiesta Region clash.

Chandler quarterback Brett Hundley led the victory with 313 yards passing and another 75 rushing. Hundley, who committed to UCLA earlier this month,  passed for four touchdowns. Three of those scores and 248 of the yards came in the first half that saw the Wolves take a 29-14 lead to intermission.

What Chandler (4-1) accomplished was five sustained touchdown drives of 65 yards or more, including four marches of 80 yards. Two of those 80-yarders came late in the third perod and  late in the final period after Brophy tied the game. Brophy's kicking game took away Chandler's return game and made the Wolves go the length of the field nearly all night. Chandler obliged with 562 yards in total offense. And no turnovers.

What made Chandler coach Jim Ewan happiest? Well, it's what happened after Brophy rallied to tie the game, 29-29, late in the third period.

"The third quarter was not the way we wanted to go," Ewan said. "They clearly outplayed us, but we showed some resiliency. We lost momentum and regained it."

Chandler running back Aaron Mayo's 7-yard TD run broke the tie in the final minute of the third period. A 45-yard TD pass from Hundley to Michael Okonkwo in the final five minutes iced it.

Brophy coach Scooter Molander was able to say the same thing as Ewan  When the Broncos went to the half down two touchdowns and had been outgained, 378-146 -- something had to change.

"We came back, didn't give up," Molander said. "I'm proud of our staff and players. They gave it everything for 48 minutes."

The prize Brophy took from the game was the emergence of a running game. With senior Josh Dennard getting untracked to the tune 131 yards on 18 carries, the Broncos had their best game rushing thus far.

"We made some adjustments ran some things from under center," Molander said. "A lot of progress. Our young quarterback (sophomore Tyler Bruggman) showed a lot of poise. He made a lot of second and third reads. A lot of quarterbacks don't start doing that until the middle of their junior year."

Bruggman completed 14 of 29 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns. The Broncos (2-3) did suffer their third straight loss, the first time that's happened in Molander's tenure at Brophy. The Broncos will still be a handful for teams the rest of the way.

"They (Brophy) aren't going to go away," Ewan said. "They're going to be hanging around come playoff time."
