3A girls state tournament: Winslow, Holbrook chalk up wins

The Winslow Lady Bulldogs and the Holbrook Roadrunners both advanced into round two of the girls' 3A State basketball tournament, after each team chalked up impressive wins in the opening round on Tuesday night.

In 3A first round state tournament games on Tuesday night, Valley Christian stopped Show Low, 33-22; Yuma Catholic outlasted American Leadership Academy-Ironwood, 68-22; American Leadership Academy-Queen Creek down Blue Ridge, 63-55; Tanque Verde beat Arizona College Prep, 57-46; and Paradise Honors knocked off Northwest Christian, 31-30.

WINSLOW 62, WICKENBURG 27

No. 9 Winslow turned in a strong first half en route to a 62-27 victory over No. 24 Wickenburg in the first round of the girls 3A State Tournament in Don Petranovich Gymnasium in Winslow on Tuesday night.

Winslow advances into Round Two of the state tournament on Friday, traveling to Chinle to face the Lady Wildcats. Earlier during the regular season, Winslow defeated Chinle, 63-49, in Winslow.

Winslow jumped out to an 18-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs outscored Wickenburg, 24-8, in the second quarter for a 42-12 halftime advantage.

The Lady Bulldogs canned 20 points and Wickenburg netted seven points in the third period, for a commanding 62-19 lead. Winslow failed to score in the fourth quarter. Wickenburg knocked down eight points.

"My entire team played and contributed tonight," said Winslow head coach Jerron Jordan. "It was a good all around team effort."

Oniah Barton-Paddock and Brianna Littl;e both scored 13 points to pace Winslow. Andrea Willeto added 11 points for the Lady Bulldogs.

HOLBROOK 55, FOUNTAIN HILLS 22

No. 10 Holbrook posted a 55-22 win over No. 23 Fountain Hills Falcons in a first round girls 3A State Tournament contest in tony Munoz Gymnasium in Holbrook on Tuesday night.

Holbrook advances into Round Two of the state tournament, taking on the Window Rock Lady Scouts on Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Events Center in Fort Defiance. Window Rock defeated Holbrook twice during the regular season. Window Rock defeated Holbrook, 55-53, in Holbrook. The Lady Scouts completed the sweep with a 43-34 win over the Roadrunners in the Events Center in Fort Defiance.

Holbrook took a 17-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Roadrunners outscored the Falcons, 22-4, for a 39-11 halftime lead.

The Roadrunners extened its lead to 53-20 after outscoring the Falcons,, 14-9, in the third period. Holbrook and Fountain Hills each scored two points in the fourth quarter.

"We started out well and the girls played relaxed," Holbrook head coach Greg Perkins said. "That makes such a difference in the way we shoot the ball. We had our transition game working as well. Now we have to be able to do the same thing on the road the rest of the way. One game at a time."

Matehya Aberle lead Holbrook with 14 points. Madison Chappell added 12 points for the Roadrunners.
