March 6, 2020 by Oree Foster, AZPreps365

The Holbrook Roadrunners are young and inexperienced.

The Roadrunners are learning fundamentals of baseball to become a better team. Five players return for Holbrook. Returning players include senior shortstop/pitcher Adrian Aguilera, seniore first base/utility, junior utility John O'Brien, junior first base/utility Jesse Knight and junior centerfielder JaggerBuckley.

Holbrook finished 2-24 overall and 0-10 in 3A East Region play last year.

Kendall Bakurza returns for his third year as the Roadrunners head coach.

Bakurza believes his team's strength this year is team unity.

"We are young and inexperienced," Bakurza said. "But what we lack in experience, we have gained a lot in team comaraderie. Our team focuses on all facets of the game. By being young in experience, we are still teaching and working on the importance of base running, pitching, catching, offense, defense and also the mental part of the game."

Bakurza said the team is focusing on goals and improving from its record last year, which included a pair of victories. He said the program's goal is to compete in the tough and talented 3A East Region and earn a state tournament berth.

Holbrook opened its diamond season with a pair of losses. Holbrook dropped an 11-1 loss to Chino Valley. The Roadrunners lost to St. Johns, 14-4, yesterday. Holbrook entertains the Chinle Wildcats in a doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
