Baseball: Chinle sweeps Holbrook; Winslow wins three in tourney

The Chinle Wildcats swept the Holbrook Roadrunners in a baseball doubleheader on Saturday.

The Winslow Bulldogs finished 5 wins and one loss in the Joe Padilla Tournament in Florence. Winslow is 7-1 overall this young season.

Winslow entertains Chinle today at 4 p.m. in Vargas Field at Winslow in a freedom baseball game.

CHINLE  19, HOLBROOK 9

Chinle took a 6-0 lead in the first inning. The Wildcats added one run in the third inning, followed by three runs in the fourth inning. Chinle crossed the plate six times in the fifth inning. Thw Wildcats put the game in the books in the sixth inning with three runs.

Jayden Guy led Chinle at the plate with a perfect three-for-three performance. Guy had four RBI and scoring three runs.

Bryneil Hoskie, Josh Tullie, Carlos Miranda and Anthony Yazzie all had two hits apiece for Chinle. Myren Hoskie and Jake Guy both had one hit for the Wildcats.

Chinle recorded 13 hits. The Wildcats showed its speed on the basepaths with 15 stolen bases.

Anthony Yazzie was the winning pitcher. Yazzie fanned three batters. Myren Hoskie and Bryneil Hoskie were summoned from the bull pen in relief. They combined for four strikeouts.

Jesse Knight led Holbrook at the plate with three hits. John O'Brien and Gabriel Baker both had two hits apiece for the Roadrunners.

Chinle head coach Don Kimbrough said the Wildcats showed some offensive power with 13 hits, 19 runs, 15 stolen bases in six innings.

"Walks followed by errors cost us five runs in the second inning," Kimbrough said. "Walks cost us. Good defensive play overall with two errors."

CHINLE 11, HOLBROOK 1

Chinle jumped out to a lead, 1-0, in the first inning in the nightcap. The Wildcats crossed the plate seven times in the third inning, followed by two runs in fourth inning and one run in the fifth inning.

Carlos Miranda led Chinle with three hits. Josh Tullie, Bryneil Hoskie, Jayden Guy and Myren Hoskie had two hits apiece for the Wildcats. Shaydin Tsosie and Jake Guy both had one hit apiece for the Wildcats.

Winning pitcher was Jayden Guy, who allowed two hits and did not give up any runs. He struc out four batters and issued two base-on-balls. Shaydin Tsosie fanned three batters, allowed two hits, one run and walked one batter in relief for Chinle.

Holbrook's Manuel Baca was the losing pitcher. Baca allowed 12 hits and 10 runs. He fanned three batters.

Daniel Montijo had two hits, while Jesse Knight and John O'Brien both had one hits each for the Roadrunners.

Chinle improved to 2-1 on the year.

"We're looking forward going into this year," said Chinle head coach Don Kimbrought. "These games were good tunes for us. We feel strong offensively and defensively with several returning starters. Our pitching is coming right along with several exceptional pitchers. We fee very optimistic and that we can play baseball with anyone."

WINSLOW 2, THATCHER 0

Winslow scored two runs in the first inning and held off Thatcher for a 2-0 victory.

Winslow had eight hits. Aiden Ortiz and Sonny Wilbnks both had two apiece for Winslow.

Winslow's Alex Vargas was the winning pitcher, throwing four innings. He allowed three hits and striking out three batters. Dylan Vargas pitched one inning in relief and did not allow any hits.

Jacob Ward was the losing pitcher. He gave up two hits. Koye Farris threw 1 1/3 innings in relief. He allowed two hits and two runs.

WINSLOW 10, GLOBE 0

Winslow scored four runs in the first inning and added five runs in second inning and one run in the third stanza.

A.J. Huerta and Josiah Montgomery both had two hits apiece for Winslow. The Bulldogs had eight hits for the game.

Winslow hurler Chris Arellano threw four innings, allowing four hits, walking one batter and striking out four.

Wendster Nosie III was the losing pitcher. He allowed four hits and three runs. 

WINSLOW 1, SAN TAN FOOTHILLS 0

Winslow tallied its lone run in the third inning for the victory.

Josiah Montgomery, Aiden Fallaha, Sonny Wilbanks, Solomon Setalla and Aiden Ortiz all had one hit for Winslow.

Jacob Guerrero was the winning pitcher, throwing five innings. He allowed one hit and struckout eight batters.

Frankie Gulko pitched 3 2/3 innings. He gave up five hits and one run, walking one batter and fanning six. Gino Mealey threw one inning.

SAFFORD 11, WINSLOW 10

Safford edged Winslow, 11-10, in the Joe Padilla Tournament.

WINSLOW 12, HAYDEN 0

Winslow blanked Hayden, 12-0, in a winner's bracket game. With the victory, the Bulldgos advanced in the tournament.

WINSLOW 6, TOMBSTONE 0

Winslow added a victory in the winner's bracket, posting a 6-0 win over Tombstone.

Winslow won its fifth game of the Joe Padilla Tournament.
