Health issues has forced successful Winslow Bulldogs boy's basketball head coach Scott Corum to resign his position.

Corum submitted his letter of resignation as boy's basketball head coach on March 13, 2020.

Corum plans to continue teaching 7th/8th grade Physical Education with Winslow School District.

"I am going to continue working as a teacher for Winslow School District," Corum said. "This is a great district to work for. I have always been supported by the administration here. There are some great teachers here that I work with as well."

Corum served as National Baseball Hall of Fame Coach Art Griffith's assistant baseball coach.

"Right now I am not sure if I will continue as Winslow's baseball assistant coach," Corum said. "It will depend of where I am with my health. I really enjoy coaching for Art Griffith. He is a terrific coach. I have learned so much from him"

Corum said his future plans is to spend time with his family.

"I have a couple of grandkids in North Carolina that I haven't seen much of," Corum sai. "I would like to get out there and visit with them."

Corum was Winslow's boy's basketball head coach for five years, 2015-2020. During his five years as Bulldogs' head coach, Corum never had a losing year. Corum's overall coaching record was 125 wins and 38 losses.

Corum guided Winslow to the 2018 3A State Championship. During 2017, Corum-coached Bulldogs finished as 3A State Runner-Up.

During his five-year head coaching tenure at Winslow, Corum won three 3A East Region championships. He guided Winslow to three tournament championships, including Tournament of Champions 2015, Sedona Red Rock 2016 and the Pepsi Tournament 2019.

Corum was honored as 2016-2017 3A East Coach of the Year; 2017-2018 3A Conference Coach of the Year; 2017-2018 Navajo Times Coach of the Year; and 2018-2019 3A East Coach of the Year.

"My reason for resigning has to do with some health issues," Corum said. "I have chronic gout and I have deceloped some issues with my neck that have already required one surgery and may require one or two more."

Corum guided Winslow to the state tournament playoffs last year. The Bulldogs completed the season 23-wins and 9-losses last year and was eliminated in the second round of the state tournament.

Winslow losses six players from this year's team, including Zach Wagner, Aaron Davis, Chad Belone, Jacob Guerrero, Jordan Lee and Josiah Montgomery.

"I was blessed with some talented basketball players during my five seasons as the coach of Winslow," Corum said. "In addition to that, I had a great coaching staff. Coach Jim MacLean was so valuable to me and was a huge part of our success. He brought many years of experience and wisdom to our program."

Corum continued, "Venton Nelson, my varsity assistant coach, was dedicated, loyal and earned my trust and the trust of our players. Stephanie Nelson, Garrett Goodrich and Zach French were so valuable to our program as well. They were so good at developing our younger players and getting them ready for the varsity level. The prepared our players by teaching them our system and the fundamentals of the game."

Corum added, "Nate Brady and Nate Velez were two of my varsity assistant coaches during the earsly years. I learned so much from both of them. We were also fortunate to have volunteer coaches, Ferlin Nez and Jay Mitchell, that put in so much time with our kids and were also a big part of our success."

Prior to becoming head coach at Winslow, Corum was head coach for two seasons at Joseph City.

Corum said he will not pursue a coaching position elsewhere.

"Not not anywhere," Corum said if plans to coach elsewhere. "But who knows. If the right opportunity opens up somewhere, I might look to get back into it. I still love the game of basketball. I have always enjoyed the competition."

The boy's basketball head coach position is being advertised on the Winslow Unified School District website.

"I really do not have anything to do with the process of hiring a new boy's basketball coach," Corum said. "As a result, I do not know the process for how they are going to select the new coach or when they will present a candidate to the school board. However, we have a great administration. I am confident they will do a good job and pick the right person to serve our kids here in Winslow."
