Archives: Tucson and Bisbee did not agree on which team won the 1911 state title

J. Fred "Pop" McKale claimed the state championship in December of 1911 in the small article appearing in the Lansing State Journal.
Tucson beat Bisbee 24-6 on Nov. 26, 1911 to go 5-0 and claim the territorial championship. Bisbee requested a rematch three weeks later and beat Tucson 17-6 and then Bisbee claimed the state title. It was a dubious claim because the Bisbee media had previously claimed the first game was the state championship. Bisbee finished the year 3-1-1.
(Tucson High moved to 5-0 on the year with the win over Bisbee.)
(Bisbee beat Tucson 17-6 a few weeks later.)
(And this is why we have playoffs. The Badgers dominated the year but scheduled that extra game.)
