Serving in the time of Covid-19

October 8, 2020 by Mike Paasch, Gilbert Christian High School

Step Up School's Dean of Students Diane Fernichio and staff receive a sweet delivery from Gilbert Christian High School seniors.

Gilbert Christian High School and Step Up Schools have been developing a relationship for the past several years. Step Up is a central Mesa Charter School and is a "Title 1 nonprofit, charter school established in 2012. The school is located in the heart of the heritage rich, Washington-Escobedo community".

The seniors at Gilbert Christian High sought out a connection with this school and also Mesa Arts Academy, where the seniors could come and play with the students, and provide a few special activities throughout the school year. Covid really curtailed that these last 6 months. But it hasn't stopped the relationship. The schools have not been able to connect personally yet, but the seniors have already brought some sweets to the upcoming fall holidays!

The seniors promoted a "Sweats for Sweets Day" where anyone at the high school could wear sweat pants, provided they brought a bag of candy for Step Up schools. This was a sweet deal for the whole school and as you can see in the photo, the candy came in!

The Gilbert Christian High School seniors are excited to serve with Step Up and Mesa Arts in person, as soon as possible, but this was a nice way to show they are thinking about the kids!
