There are still taller mountains to climb, but former state champion golfer Charlie Beljan scaled a significant peak in his pro career on Monday.

Beljan, the 5A state high school medalist in 2001 and a member of three state championship teams at Red Mountain High School (2000-2002), earned his first PGA TOUR card Monday by finishing in a tie for 13th at the PGA Qualifying School's final stage in La Quinta, Calif.

Beljan, 27, reached the final stage - six consecutive 18-hole rounds - at PGA West, which houses Stadium and Jack Nicklaus Tournament courses. Players alternated their six rounds at the two courses. Beljan tied for 13th with four other golfers with scores of 11-under par. Beljan was one of 27 players to earn their TOUR card. The six rounds were played Nov. 30-Dec. 5.

Beljan, a 2003 graduate of Red Mountain HS, went on to play four years at New Mexico and competed four years on the Gateway Tour. Beljan won seven Gateway events and was that tour's leading money winner twice. He also was the U.S. Junior champ in 2002, joining several other notables such as Tiger Woods, David Duval and Johnny Miller as winners of the event.
