Sabino senior thrower Jade Kwinn set a personal record in the javelin throw held Saturday at Seton Catholic in Chandler to win her first state championship. Her throw of 151-06 set a personal and state record at the same time.

“I felt like I was going to PR when I got here,” Kwinn said. “I stayed calm for the most part and treated it like any other meet.”

Kwinn came to the sport a couple of years ago, about the time the AIA sanctioned the javelin throw for state competition.

“I was doing the hep (heptathlon) and I went to my throwing coach and I discovered how much I really liked it,” Kwinn added. “It felt natural and I realized I was good at it and I had the drive to get better and here I am, a state champion.”

The Javelin throw became an AIA sanctioned event in 2018 and former Kofa standout Keiley Sharp won the Division I title that year with a throw of 149-02, although she had a personal record of 150-08 that season.

Chandler senior Makayla Hunter also threw 151-06 in D-I competition on Saturday to go along Kwinn’s record-setting mark. These three throws are the only known AIA sanctioned marks over 150 feet, although the mark might have been reached in junior Olympic competition.

The state tournament for all other events will take place next week starting on May 12.

For the boys, former Marcos de Niza standout Carlan Naisant (204-0) set the current state record at the Chandler Rotary on March 24, 2018 and former Mountain pointe standout Alexander Ramirez had his throw (200-11) in April 16, 2019. This are the only known throws over 200 feet in the modern era.

Former Tucson High thrower John Moran recorded a throw of 204-10.5 in 1940.
