The Jaguars improved to 5-0 on the year for the first time since 2016, and for only the second time in program history, after beating Nogales 42-0 at home Thursday night. The 2016 squad went 8-3 after reaching the state playoffs for the first time since 1996. That team opened up 6-0 and it might be difficult to match that mark this year with the Jaguars hosting Salpointe (3-1) next week.
Desert View scored 34 points in the first quarter against Nogales with Justin Bucio running the ball in from 15 yards out with 11:33 left in the first. Bucio’s run came after Serge Gboweiah ripped off runs of 25 and 40 yards to set the tone early.
Gboweiah finished with 83 yards on four rushes which is far below the numbers the senior is used to putting up but it was more than the Jaguars needed with Oscar Barraza completing four passes for 128 yards including a 25-yard scoring throw to Rudy Rodriguez with 9:57 left in the first to put Desert View up 14-0.

The Jaguar defense forced another punt and Barraza hit Jah-Li Govan from 16 yards to increase the lead to 21-0 with 5:04 left. Carlos Alvarez picked up an interception to put the Jaguars back in business and Gboweiah ran the ball in from 11 yards out to make it 28-0 with 3:01 left in the opening quarter.
Carlo Arvizu came up with an interception and Alvarez put Desert View up 34-0 on a 23-yard run with a blocked extra point as time expired in the quarter. Nogales punted again and Barraza hit Enrique Cancio from 36 yards out for the 42-0 final including a 2-point run from Alvarez.
A running clock, combined with mass substitutions, made things scoreless the rest of the way. Alvarez finished with 50 yards rushing on two attempts and Govan had 67 yards receiving on two catches. In all, the Jaguars gained 192 yards rushing and 128 yards passing to 77 total yards gained by the Apaches.
Nogales fell to 2-3 on the year and the team will host Rincon/UHS (1-3) next week. The Apaches finish off with a difficult stretch with Cienega, Marana, Ironwood Ridge and Sunnyside left on the schedule.
The first set of rankings for 4A through the Open Division are slated to be released on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at noon. The Jaguars might have enough power points to reach the first Open Division rankings next Tuesday.
