Safford's Herman Andrews, Jr. earned his 700th career victory

Safford head coach Herman Andrews, Jr. earned his 700th career victory this week which puts the legendary coach in rare territory with the next coach on the list from Arizona being former Douglas and Salpointe coach Timothy Brown with 596.

Andrews also earned his 8th team title last year which put him tied four fourth place all-time in Arizona behind Robert DeBerry of Sunnyside (15), Dennis Pirch of Payson (10) and Don Klostreich of Sunnyside (9). Former Winslow/Joseph City coach Bob Crosswhite also has eight state titles.

His most dominant wrestlers include four-time state champions Trey Andrews (2009-2012), Mckade Finch (2016-2019) and Dawon Andrews (2016-2019).

Safford competes in Division III and the Bulldogs are slated to take part in two long-standing tournaments in january. The Peoria Invitational starts on Jan. 7 and the Flowing Wells Invitational starts on Jan. 14.  The Flowing Wells Invitational is scheduled to return to the Tucson Community Center.

Sectionals are set for Feb. 12 and the state tournament will start on Feb. 17 at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix.
