Ryan Gooding hit Kydin Richardson from 10 yards out to put St. David up 7-0 on Baboquivari less than one minute into their game Friday night and the Tigers were off. The Tigers scored 35 points in the first quarter and the team finished with over 300 yards of offense to come away with a 58-6 win to move to 2-0 on the year for the third season in a row.

St. David finished 10-2 last year with both losses coming to Mogollon including a 58-12 setback in the 1A state championship game last November. Mogollon has 22 straight victories dating back to 2020 and the Mustangs will visit St. David on Sept. 16. By then, that winning streak for the Mustangs could reach 25.

Gooding finished 6-6 in the air with 140 yards passing with three touchdowns. The senior QB also rushed one time for a 21-yard score. He threw a 1-yard toss to Richardson to go with the 10-yard play and he also hit Conner Curtis on a 71-yard play.

Marek Haynie finished with 45 yards on the ground with two TDs, Grayson Merrill had a 65-yard scoring run and Curtis added a 4-yard run. Paul Parker connected on a 36-yard field goal for St. David.

Baboquivari came in on high note after beating Ft. Thomas 50-6 last week but the Warriors struggled early with costly penalties and the game got out of hand early. Still junior QB Xavier Mease put together 112 yards of offense before he left the game with an injury in the middle of the third quarter. Jesus Buendia stepped in and he broke free on a 6-yard run to provide the six points for the Warriors. Seth Castro rushed for 59 yards on 10 carries and he added 32 yards receiving on four catches.

St. David (2-0) will have a short week with Bagdad (2-0) coming in Thursday night and Baboquivari (1-1) will travel to Glendale on Saturday to take on the Desert Heights Prep Academy (0-2).
