Rude hosts: Mesquite, Gilbert go unbeaten in own BB tourney

Mesquite and Gilbert high schools completed five days and five games of baseball on Thursday no worse for the wear.

Mesquite rallied for a run in the sixth and the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh to edge Red Mountain, 4-3, at Mesquite to complete a sweep of its foes. Mesquite defeated Mesa Mountain View, Independence, Skyline, Desert Vista and Red Mountain Mesquite has won nine games in a row and is 12-3 overall. The Wildcats are 5-0 in power-point games and resume those games next week..

Mesquite pinch-hitter Garrett Feldman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded forcing in the winning run against Red Mountain. Garrett Jeffries, who pitched the final inning to earn the win, doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and scored the winning run. Jeffries was 3-for-4 at the plate. Spencer Applebach and Jake Howard added two singles apiece and each droive in a run.

Red Mountain, which finished 3-2 in the tournament with one-run losses in the final inning to Basha and Mesquite, got three hits from Aaron Smith and two each from Tarann Beasley and Connor Markell.

At Gilbert High, Gilbert run-ruled Mountain View, 12-2, to complete its unbeaten slate of games. The Tigers defeated Independence, McClintock, Desert Vista, Westview and Mountain View. Gilbert has won nine of its last 10 games and is 11-5 for the season.

Senior pitcher Taylor Stapley allowed six hits in five innings of work and was 3-for-3 at the plate with 3 RBI to pace Gilbert. Gilbert banged out 10 hits, drew five walks and scored five of its runs on wild pitches. Mountain View also committed three errors. Tyler Wiehl had two hits, including a homer for Mountain View.
