Canyon View students, teachers and parents had already experienced a War of the White Tanks. Last night at Jaguar Stadium featured a Battle of the Canyons.

The Canyon View varsity football team dominated with a 32-3 win over Willow Canyon. This victory improved the Jaguars to 1-0 in region play.

Additionally, the game's theme was Pink Out due to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The team wore their custom pink uniforms in support of those battling breast cancer and in honor of JV football player Cash Chamber, whose mother is currently battling the disease

“Playing for one of our teammates' family members was very special and very motivating,” starting quarterback Justin Clark said.

Although Willow Canyon got on the board first with a field goal, the Jaguars bounced back with a touchdown run by Matthew Sarzosa and two-point conversion to make the score 8-3 with over five minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The team tried a new strategy of swapping quarterbacks Beau Devens and Clark in the second quarter, which proved successful as the Jaguars scored almost immediately as Devens connected on touchdown passes to Ayden Lange and Keegan Landis.

Canyon View led 22-3 at halftime.

In the second half, the starters kept the same consistency from the previous quarters. Only five minutes into the third quarter, senior linebacker Jesse Rocha added to the lead with a Jaguar safety.

In the fourth quarter, Canyon View extended their lead with a late touchdown by running back Caleb Lane. The Jaguars added another safety late in the game to extend the lead to 32-3.

“We did really well. We’ve made a lot of progress and tonight really shows that,” coach Nick Gehrts said.

The win improved their overall record to 3-3 as the team heads into a bye week before taking on Apollo on October 21.
