Megan Russell attends Gilbert Christian High School and is a member of the AIA's student SID program.

Michelle Lopez is a sophomore on the Gilbert Christian High School Volleyball Team. This is her second year playing varsity for the Knights as one of two defensive specialists on the team. She is especially proficient in returning those killer serves by her opponents. Michelle has played a total of nine seasons of competitive volleyball between school and club teams. She is a great addition to the Knights’ team!

While Michelle excels on the court, her character shines even brighter off the court. When asked how she manages her athletic responsibilities with school and home life she states, “I don’t really have any other activities other than youth group. God always comes first for me so I ask the coaches if I can leave early on Wednesdays to go to youth group.” Keeping her priorities straight and utilizing a sports routine to keep up with work is how Michelle thrives in busy seasons.

Michelle’s character shows up in the way she interacts with her team. When asked how she likes to keep things positive on the court she replied, “I try to put aside my emotions for the benefit of the team. I encourage them to keep trying and try to make them laugh to forget about the negativity.” She also expressed a teachable heart when discussing how she learns from her coaches. Both her interactions with her teammates and her coaches are indicative of great leadership.

The character of Michelle Lopez was summed up in her response to what she has learned in her time as an athlete: “One important lesson I’ve learned from my time as an athlete is patience with myself, my team, and my coaches. I learned, and am still learning, how to trust my coaches and listen to them with an open mind and heart.”

Michelle will finish this year’s Fall season at playoffs that begin on November 5th.She plans to play on the school team’s sand court this coming spring . We expect to see great things from Michelle Lopez on both courts in the next two years to come.

Go Knights!
