Corona del Sol's Carston Kieffer did more than than kick field goals and extra points on Friday night.

The senior kicker added a scoring run on the last play from scrimmage of the first half helping the Aztecs to a double-digit lead at intermission and ultimately to a 20-17 triumph over Desert Ridge at Desert Ridge.

Eighth-ranked Corona del Sol clinched the 6A Central Region title with the win, improving its overall record to 8-1 and completing region play at 4-0. The win was the Aztecs seventh in a row. Desert Ridge fell to 3-6, 1-3 and ended the Jaguars slim playoff hopes with a week left in the regular season.

Corona del Sol spotted Desert Ridge a 7-0 lead. The Jaguars drove 71 yards in eight plays on the game's first possession with tight-end-turned quarterback due to injury scoring on a 1-yard run. Corona proceeded to score all its points unanswered for a 20-7 advantage with 2:29 left in the third quarter.

Kieffer started the 20-point run with 26-yard field goal to put Corona on the board, albeit trailing 7-3 after the first quarter. Corona went ahead to stay (10-7) and led by that count going to halftime thanks to an 11-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Crew Swearingen to sophomore wideout Raiden Vines-bright. Swearingen was subbing for injured Connor Ackerley, who was out with an ankle injury suffered last week.

It was back to Kieffer for the final 10 points of Corona's 20-point run. The Aztecs lined up for field-goal attempt with 10 seconds left before halftime. Kieffer, however, took the snap and headed left for a 23-yard TD run giving the Aztecs a 17-7 lead with three seconds left. Corona's final points of the night came with 2:29 left in the third period with Kieffer nailing a 36-yard field goal.

Desert Ridge didn't surrender down 20-7. Junior running back Josh Orona scored on a 6-yard run with eight seconds left in the third to pull the Jaguars within 20-14.

Corona was stopped on a three-and-out to open the fourth quarter. Desert Ridge took better than five minutes on its first possession of the final period and settled for a 30-yard field goal from Rylen Thomson with 4:24 to go.

That possession was the last of the game for Desert Ridge. Corona managed to pick up two first downs. The Aztecs escaped a first-and-15 hole to start the possession with 4:24 left. Johnathan Kubat secured one first down with a tough run on third down. Swearingen's third-and-8 completion to Zuri Glenn got the next one allowed Corona to run out the clock.

Next week is the final week of the regular season with most games on Thursday (Nov. 10) since Veteran's Day is next Friday. Corona finishes Thursday with a road game at Casteel. Desert Ridge completes its season and region play at Desert Vista.
