MLK Basketball Classic Recap

The 19th Annual MLK Basketball Classic took place on Monday, January 16 with eight games played in McKale Center on the University of Arizona campus. A youth exhibition game got things started at 8 a.m.

The Tucson version of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Basketball Classic is the longest continually running event of its kind in a Division I arena.

 

YOUTH EXHIBITION GAME

Manzo beat Booth-Fickett 12-10 in a spirited battle on the big court.

The 40th Annual Roskruge Cougar Classic is set to begin on Feb. 14 featuring a variety of age groups from 7th grade and under.

SAHUARITA 55, AMPHITHEATER 30

No. 24 Sahuarita is now 8-5 in ranking games and No. 37 Amphitheater is 3-8. Both teams play in the 4A Gila Region.

GREGORY SCHOOL 62, ST. AUGUSTINE 35

1A No. 15 The Gregory School is now 7-6 and 2A No. 17 St. Augustine is now 6-6.

IRONWOOD RIDGE 63, MOUNTAIN VIEW 34

No. 16 Ironwood Ridge is now 9-4 and No. 33 Mountain View Marana is 3-8. Both play in the 5A Southern Region.

 

TOP PERFORMANCES

Sidney Anderson with 24 points and Morgan Walter 11 for the Nighthawks. Kayla Carter had 12 for Mountain View.

THATCHER 80, SABINO 70

No. 17 Thatcher is now 6-3 on the year and No. 28 Sabino is 5-6. Both teams compete in the 3A South Region.

Weston Haebig 38 points for Sabino. Christian Carter 23, Brandon Napier 19, Bradley Curtis 18 and Bryce Larson 13 for Thatcher.

SUNNYSIDE 43, RINCON/UNIVERSITY 34

No. 16 Sunnyside is now 10-3 on the year and No. 25 Rincon/UHS is now 6-6. Both teams play in the 6A South Region.

No. 13 Tucson is 10-2 and No. 32 Marana is 2-9. This was a 6A South Region game.
