Campo Verde and Higley, San Tan Region rivals, engaged in a pitchers duel in the first round of the 5A state softball tournament on Saturday. A pair of 17-game-winners donned the circle - Campo Verde's Addison Gavigan and Higley's Kyndal Williams.

Those pitchers matched up late in the regular season with Williams prevailing, 2-0. The result Saturday was nearly a carbon copy with a couple minor differences.

Campo Verde won this time, 1-0, using a 13-strikeout, no-hitter from Gavigan. Williams was the hard-luck loser, allowing two hits and fanning 10. The victory was Campo Verde's first in a state tournament (5A) since 2016 (play in games are not state tournament games).

Campo Verde (19-9) moves on to the second round Tuesday. The Coyotes will host #13 Sunrise Mountain (12-10), an 11-6 winner over #4 Cactus Shadows. Game time Tuesday is set for 4 p.m.

The game's lone run scored in the second inning. Kelsey Barlet led off with a walk and moved to second via sacrifice by Brooklyn Giesfski. After a strikeout, ninth-place hitter Brennan Reid poked a single to right field scoring Barlet.

Gavigan's only jam was in the first inning. She issued a leadoff walk and hit a batter with one out, but escaped with a strikeout and ground out. Only two runners reached base the rest of the game, both via walks. She retired the last 12 batters in order.
