Shutout pitching. A couple of long balls. Those ingredients spelled a 4-0 victory for Red Mountain over Sunnyside Tuesday night in a 6A state softball quarterfinal game at Quail Run Park on Mesa.

Sophomore pitcher Kendall Cochran scattered four hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out seven helping Red Mountain to the tournament semifinals.

The semifinals of the double elimination tourney are Wednesday. #6 Red Mountain faces #4 Perry and #1 Queen Creek plays #2 Basha. Both games start at 6:30 p.m. at Quail Run.

Cochran, a sophomore, received all the run support in the second and third innings (two runs each frame). Three hits, a walk and Sunnyside error added up to the tallies in the second inning with the lone RBI going to Payton Westra via a single. Sophia Hutchison and Taylor Hampton homered back-to-back in the third to finish off Red Mountain's scoring.

Hampton led Red Mountain's nine-hit attack with three hits. Westra and Sarah Misner (2 for 3, both doubles) were the other multiple-hit players for the Mountain Lions. Sunnyside, which bounced back from a first-game loss in the tournament to win three games in a row, was led at the plate by Leylanni Lopez. Lopez was 2 for 2 and had the Blue Devils only extra-base hit - a fifth-inning double.
