Scottsdale Christian standout Gracie McGovern shot an 8-under-par 132 (63-69) to win the Division III state tournament held at the Omni Tucson National on Monday and Tuesday. McGovern held off Scottsdale Prep sophomore Anya Mathur and Scottsdale Prep senior Adam Miller to win the outright championship by one stroke.

Mathur (67-63: 133) and Miller (68-65: 133) drew close with McGovern picking up bogey on the 16th hole but her 4-stroke lead after the first round was just too much for the challengers to overcome. Miller brought home the boy’s championship which is his third in a row.

Former Snowflake standout Kyle Jones won four state titles from 2008 to 2011 and former Camp Verde standout Rip Vaughn won four between 1974 to 1977. Miller joins former Snowflake standout John Davis, who won three between 1992 to 1994.

As a team, Scottsdale Prep shot a 15-under 545 to win the state championship over Scottsdale Christian (588) and Phoenix Country Day (602).

Former Estrella Foothills standout Sarah Freeman won a spring golf title in 2007. McGovern joins Freeman as the only girls to win a D-III championship since the level began in 1972.
