No. 3 Marana beat No. 14 Dobson 23-0 Tuesday night to advance to the 6A quarterfinal round on Thursday where the Tigers will host No. 11 Mountain Ridge at 6 p.m. Mountain Ridge upset No. 6 Chandler 20-18 to set up the quarterfinal match.

Marana is now 13-0 on the year and Mountain Ridge will come in with a 9-5 mark in this inaugural season. Dobson ended the year with a 6-7 record and Chandler was 11-2.

There were seven interceptions between Marana and Dobson and the first came on the first drive with Maria Caldwell setting up Dobson but the Mustangs gave the ball back on downs. Marana drove again but Sam Armenta came up with an interception to hold the Tigers back again with 3:02 left in the first quarter.

Dobson gave the ball back on downs again and Roxi Singer hit Malaysia Roebuck for 35 yards to help set up a 29-yard field goal for Amy Dear to put Marana up 3-0 with 9:07 left in the half. Adrian Griffin returned an interception for 41 yards to put Marana up 10-0 on an extra point from Thais Monson on the next drive for Dobson. Sadie Brown came up with another interception for Marana but the half ended with the Tigers up 10-0.

Roebuck came up with her own interception to start the second half and Sophia Figueroa hit Madison Myers-Rebidas from eight yards out to put Marana up 17-0 with 10:10 left in the third. Ciara Dodd had an interception for Dobson with 7:33 left in the game but the Mustangs gave the ball right back on downs once again.

Figueroa hit Roebuck for a 92 yard touchdown on the next play but that catch was called back, only to have Figueroa throw to Griffin for 87 yards four plays later to put the Tigers up 23-0 with 3:44 left in the game. Bella Jensen had an interception for Dobson with 1:16 left but the game ended a few plays later.

Marana beat Dobson 17-0 in the regular season three weeks ago and Tiger head coach Shaun Lara sees some improvement in the Mustangs and how his program has also improved.

“We talked last week about going undefeated throughout the season,” Lara said. “But going out here and playing against a good Dobson team, that played way better than the first time we saw them, and we still put up points and we still shut them out. They're going to be a good program in the future.”

Ahdiayh Chee threw for 156 yards with Billey pulling in 51 of those, Kayla Hayes had 33 yards receiving and Jensen had 27.

Figueroa threw for 144 yards and Singer threw for 114 for a combined 258 yards for the Tigers. Griffin had 129 yards receiving with a touchdown, Rebidas had 58 yards receiving with a TD and Roebuck pulled in 53 yards. Griffin also ran for 27 yards and she had a 41-yard interception return for a score.

For Dobson, the future looks pretty good according to head coach Joe Polanco.

“So we had a lot of adversity but we came out and competed well for our first year. Yeah, it was exciting,” Polanco said. “More girls will be trying out, I hope we can get the word out there.”

Marana is favored once again on Thursday night.

“We just have to keep coming together. We have to stay together. We have to execute on the offense,” Lara added. “We have to put up those points and everything's clicking. You know when things are working right you don't really want to change, if it’s not broke, don't fix it.”
