One thing we learned over and over this season was Chaparral outfielder Dylan Cozens packs  --- a  wallop.

Cozens slammed the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the seventh for a two-run homer Tuesday night  to give No. 2 seed Chaparral its first big-school baseball title, a dramatic 5-3 win over No. 4 Brophy for the Division I crown at Camelback Ranch Glendale Stadium. It was the third time in four meetings over the last three weeks that Chaparral defeated Brophy this season.

Chaparral (28-7) won its 10th baseball title since the school opened nearly 40 years ago. It was also the ninth time in a row the Firebirds have won a championship game. That streak began with a title in 1999 and also includes wins in 2000, 2003-2006, 2008 and 2011. It was the second title in as many seasons for head coach Sam Messina. For Brophy (23-9)  it was its fourth title-game appearance and the third time it has finished runner-up. The last time was in 2007. All of Brophy's title-game appearances have been with Tom Succow at the helm.

Cozens blast was to center field (his 19th this season) and eluded leaping Brophy outfielder Chris Beall. Scoring in front of Cozens was Nick Diamond, who started the winning rally with 2-2 pitch single to right off Brophy reliever Jake Steffens. The homer drove in the only runs via a hit on the evening for Chaparral, which scored two runs in the first on a pair of bases-loaded walks and a run in the third on a passed ball.

Steffens, one of five pitchers used in the game (three by Chaparral and two by Brophy), retired the first seven batters he faced in relief of starter David Graybill. Steffens had two easy innings and looked sharp even until giving up the back-to-back hits that finished the 2012 prep season.

Chaparral's pitching trio of starter Tyger Talley, Diamond and Dillon Bigcrane combined to allow six hits and fanned 15. Talley struck out five in three innings of work, Diamond three in 1 1/3 innings and Bigcrane totated seven in 2 2 2/3 hitless innings. He also earned the victory. Talley gave up solo homers to Brophy's Nick Jewett in the second and Ryan Castellani in the third.

Castellani's homer tied the game briefly at 2, but Chaparral got  the lead back in its half of the third on singles by Jeremy Wolf and Bigcrane, a sacrifice and passed ball.

Even though Graybill left the pitcher's mound after four innings, his bat delivered the single that tied the game a final time at 3 in the top of the fifth. It scored Castellani, who tripled leading off the inning off Diamond.

Wolf and Cozens led Chaparral with two hits apiece and both scored twice. Castellani was the only Brophy player with multiple hits.
