NFL YET blown out in final game of football season

NFL YET Academy (3-7) came into Friday night’s game feeling good after a win last week against the San Pasqual Warriors, but the feeling did not last long as they were blown out 73-0 by the San Tan Charter Roadrunners (7-2).
The Roadrunners were all over the Eagles right from the start, taking the opening kickoff for a touchdown to open the scoring, 7-0.
The Eagles were sloppy starting with their first play from scrimmage that resulted in a false start and a five-yard penalty to back them up.
The Roadrunners' front seven was living in the Eagles’ backfield the entire night, generating pressure and making it tough on junior middle linebacker Jayden Fox in his first start as quarterback. Abel Ruiz, the team's starter, was serving a suspension for the final game.
“That’s been a struggle for us,” NFL YET head coach Marcel Lopez said. “Our o-line needs to get better. We're pretty young up there and we're missing two starters and we have two freshmen that are in there playing for us.”
On the second offensive drive for NFL YET, the Roadrunners blocked the punt and set themselves up first-and-10 on the 12-yard -line before punching it in, going up 13-0.
Turnovers were a big issue for the Eagles as they coughed up the football five times in the first half.
The Roadrunners' defense and special teams were able to score a combined 24 points, including two pick-sixes and a blocked punt, which was returned for a touchdown.
“Our fight was there when we were down to the bodies that we were. It would have been easy just to quit and throw in the towel but they kept fighting. They worked their tails off,” Lopez said.
The Eagles found themselves down 59-0 at halftime.
Fox started the third quarter with a nice return, setting the offense up in plus territory with the help of a horse-collar tackle penalty tacked on at the end of the play.
However, NFL YET could not capitalize and ended up turning the ball over on downs.
The offensive struggles were evident all night from the Eagles as they simply struggled to net positive plays.
“They were able to read the plays pretty good on some of those power plays they read it pretty nice,” Fox said. “That line just came prepared and knew what they wanted to do and executed.”
NFL YET went into the fourth quarter trailing 66-0 as the Roadrunners added one touchdown in the third.
Defense was not the problem for the Eagles, as it was their offense and special teams that let the team down.
The Roadrunners added yet another punt return touchdown in the fourth quarter to close out the game 73-0.
Despite the loss, NFL YET believes it has a bright future ahead with a host of players returning next year who will be seniors.
“I’m excited most of my friends are seniors and I hope that we're going to build off of that and probably going to get some new players and teach them what I know,” NFL YET junior tackle and defensive end Valentin Ayala said. “Along with getting better myself in the offseason.”
