Georgetown over Sunrise Mountain at the Flowing Wells Holiday Shootout

FLOWING WELLS HOLIDAY SHOOTOUT

Georgetown, Texas held on to defeat Sunrise Mountain 51-46 to capture the championship of the Flowing Wells Holiday Shootout Friday night in Tucson. The Eagles (18-4) went 4-0 at the tournament and Sunrise Mountain (12-3) finished 3-1 on Thursday and Friday.

The Eagles advanced to an Area Championship last year in Texas and the Mustangs are the Arizona defending 5A state champions, but without the services of Mackenzie Nielsen (18 points per game), Mackenzie Dunham (16.6) and Reena Bhakta (12.3) who all graduated. Still, Sunrise Mountain and Georgetown battled to the end.

Sunrise Mountain sprinted out to a 10-3 lead, with Savanna Dotray hitting a 3-pointer to give the Mustangs the early margin with 1:30 left in the first quarter. The Eagles were unfazed and Reese Hoadly scored six points to help fuel an 8-0 run to take an 11-10 lead with 6:24 left in the half.

The teams went back and forth from there but the Eagles took a 26-21 lead at the half only to have the Mustangs force a 30-30 tie with 2:55 left in the third. Bella Dabbs hit a 3-pointer to spark a 10-0 run by Georgetown and the team led 40-32 heading to the final quarter. Dabbs hit a couple of free throws to give the Eagles a 48-42 lead with 1:11 left but a 3-pointer from Laney Demaree kept Sunrise Mountain close, down 49-46 with 23.9 seconds left.

The Eagles missed a couple free throws with about 18 seconds left in the game, which opened the door for the Mustangs, but a 3-point attempt from Dotray was about an inch off and Dabbs put the game away with a couple of free throws with 10.1 seconds left for the 51-46 win.

Hoadley led the Eagles with 18 points, Dabbs added 11 and Cassady Lee had eight. Dotray scored 18 to lead Sunrise Mountain, Jaden Maza scored 14 and Addison Wiemann had eight.

Georgetown will travel to play Elgin (7-15) on Jan. 5 and Sunrise Mountain will host Ironwood (2-8) on Jan. 9.

Sunnyside beat Flowing Wells 50-17 to take third place and Peoria beat Buena 53-39 to win the Consolation Bracket.
