Canyon View’s defense scored three pick-six touchdowns en route to a 66-0 victory against Notre Dame Prep in Scottsdale on Wednesday evening.

Jaguars senior linebacker and center Maycie Bassett helped secure back-to-back shutouts for her team on consecutive nights. Canyon View beat Desert Edge, 12-0, the previous night.

The Jaguars had nine shutouts last season.

For Bassett, it was an unforgettable night. The reigning defensive player of the year recorded a season-high and team-high 15 tackles with three interceptions. The senior scored two pick-six touchdowns.

The two pick-six touchdowns came a minute apart in the fourth quarter. The first went for 30 yards with 8:14 left in the fourth. 

Bassett waited on the telegraphed delayed throw and eyed the ball like a hawk waiting for its prey. Her second pick-six came with 7:04 left and went for 35 yards. That ballooned the Canyon View lead to 58-0.

Bassett was three tackles away from breaking her career-high of 18 tackles in a game.

“She came to the sideline and after three interceptions said, ‘I almost wish I had the flags over the interceptions,’ even though she had two interceptions for touchdowns, and three all together,” Canyon View coach Cory Beal said. 

Notre Dame Prep’s sophomore starting quarterback, Lily McCracken, threw three interceptions before being relieved of her duties.

The first was a 10-yard pick-six returned by Jaguars junior wide receiver and defensive back Gianah Vega to open up the scoring to make it 7-0 with 3:48 in the first quarter.

McCracken’s second and third interceptions came on back-to-back offensive drives. Canyon View’s junior safety and wide receiver Kaylani Tucker got the second interception and Bassett got the third with 1:11 left in the first half making it 20-0 at the break.

“They did a good job in the perimeter of keeping her (McCracken) in,” Notre Dame coach Mike Brown said. “We just didn’t get anything up the middle, so like I said, that’s up to me to figure something out and that’s what I’ll be doing.”

Senior quarterback Katelyn Jewell continued her hot start to the season, throwing for five touchdowns  with one interception. Jewell added one rushing touchdown as well.

She connected with eight different receivers, which the Canyon View coaching staff was eager to see after numerous drops were recorded the previous night versus Desert Edge.

“It shows a lot of mental toughness,” Canyon View assistant coach Manny Moreno said. “That was our focus, to be mentally tough. We dropped 11 passes last night, which was probably more than the entire season last year, so we were not happy about that. The girls bounced back.”

Junior wide receiver Jaila Flowers led the receiving corp with four receptions for 80 yards and two 35-yard touchdowns.

Canyon View (3-0) will play at Hamilton (3-0) on Monday at 6 p.m. Notre Dame Prep (1-3) will travel to Chaparral (0-2) on Monday at 6 p.m.
