Sunrise Mountain’s volleyball project keeps gaining momentum.

The Mustangs swept Northwest Region rival Centennial, 25-13, 25-17, 25-21, Wednesday at home, extending their consecutive game win streak to 21.

The Peoria program will get another chance to prove itself on Friday when the prestigious 2024 Nike Tournament of Champions tips off at the Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa. A thrilling five-game upset of the three-time defending champ Horizon Huskies on Sept. 5 has so far been the defining moment of Sunrise Mountain’s season.

That impressive victory sparked its current eight match win streak. Sunrise Mountain (14-3 overall, 4-0 in region) now has its sights set on bringing home the school’s first indoor title.

“That (state title) is what we are looking for in the future, and that’s what we have our eye on,” the team’s seventh-year coach Brandi Jans said.

The Mustangs are led by a strong cast of juniors, beginning with powerhouse hitter Addison Wiemann, the athletic Lily Rolfes at setter and defensive stalwart Kami Milner.

Each was key during Wednesday’s sweep but so was a senior, outside hitter Elizabeth Trachte. With the 6-2 Wiemann in the back row, Trachte (.364 hitting percentage in the game) tallied three of her final 12 kills from the left pin to help put away Centennial.

The senior consistently hit over Centennial’s block when given the chance.

“Lilly definitely helped while running our offense,” said Wiemann about her team’s third game performance against Centennial. “She just doesn’t run it to one person. She shares the ball around, which makes it harder for the blockers to read us. Kami dominates in the back row. And we have that team chemistry that brings all of us all together.”

Wiemann executed a high-light reel play in the third game that caught Centennial by surprise and made her teammates celebrate wildly.

Setter Makenna Corries hustled her way to the back row to get a ball over, but the pass went directly to Wiemann, who immediately took care of business. That kill was her best one of the 17 she tallied.

Wiemann along with Milner, Manning and Trachte each finished with nine or more digs. Another 6-2 outside hitter standout, Centennial’s Payton Whalen, and teammate Alex Thompson did all they could in the third game to keep their squad in the third game.

At times, when Centennial went on runs, Rolfes went to Lily Eskew and Shelby Schoenbeck in the middle for quick kills to get Sunrise Mountain back on track.

Sunrise Mountain will return to the court on Saturday, when it faces Pinnacle, California The Bishop’s School and Oregon Jesuit at the Nike TOC.
