John Gleeson Lancer Cross Country Invitational

The various sectional races for Cross Country are set for October 23 and 24 in Gilbert, Glendale, Page and Rio Rico with the state championships slated for Saturday, November 2 at the Cave Creek Golf Course in Phoenix.

The top 50 percent of the teams at each of the sectionals will qualify for state along with the top seven runners not attached to a qualifying team.

Salpointe held its annual John Gleeson Lancer Invitational on Saturday at the historic Rolling Hills Golf Course in Tucson with Xavier Prep taking the girl’s competition and Mountain Ridge winning on the boy’s side.

Tanque Verde senior Andrew Smith won with a time of 16:24.3 and Rincon/University senior Amelia North won with a time of 19:03.1. Led by junior Ella Wadsworth, who took second with a time of 19:24.8, Xavier placed five runners in the top 34 to hold off Ironwood Ridge 73 to 78.

Mountain Ridge junior Collin Foley took third with a time of 16:43.9 and Mountain Ridge placed three runners in the top ten to edge out Mica Mountain 95 to 110.

Marana will host the “Eye of the Tiger” on Oct. 19 to end the regular season.
