The No. 1-ranked San Tan Charter Roadrunners exploded in the first half, scoring 42 points en route to a 49-7 road win over the NFL Yet Academy Eagles Friday night.
The Roadrunners scored on the second play from scrimmage on a 60-yard touchdown run by sophomore Benny Sharpe. Senior quarterback Uriah Neloms, an Arizona State commit, threw a touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Brody Prassas and freshman tight end London Mahoney added a rushing touchdown to give the Roadrunners a 21-0 first-quarter lead.
“I felt like it was pretty good complementary football,” San Tan coach Chase Cartwright said. “Our offensive line and tight end group has been really solid all year in running the football and establishing the line of scrimmage.”
Following an interception by the Roadrunners’ freshman wide receiver and defensive back Isaiah Neloms on the last play of the first quarter, his older brother, Uriah, took off for a 43-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter. Uriah finished with 117 passing yards and one TD along with 43 rushing yards and one rushing TD.
“My guys were just running the right routes and doing what coach says to give themselves the opportunity to play,” Uriah said.
The Roadrunners found the end zone twice more in the second quarter. Roadrunners’ freshman quarterback Luke Cardis found junior wide receiver Timi Akinyoyenu for a 24-yard TD pass and senior running back Micahel Sauceda added an 8-yard rushing TD, bringing the lead to 42-0 at halftime.
On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, the Eagles fumbled the ball, which was recovered by the Roadrunners’ Samuel Servin. Three plays later, the Eagles got the ball back on an interception by sophomore defensive back Inazia Young.
A 20-yard run by Eagles sophomore running back Jamaica Vandever gave the team the ball on the 30-yard line. The Eagles capitalized on this as sophomore quarterback Daniel Najar found junior wide receiver Adam Gutierrez for a 30-yard TD pass making the score 42-7.
“The guys were just getting after it,” NFL Yet coach Marcel Lopez said. “My guys played with some pride and that is all we asked them to do.”
On a second down in the fourth quarter, Eagles junior defensive back Stanley Holley Jr. sacked the Roadrunners’ quarterback for an 11-yard loss. On the next play, Cardis connected with sophomore tight end Henry Tauscher for a 74-yard TD pass to make the score 49-7.
The Roadrunners (9-0) will host Arete Prep (5-4) next Friday at 7 p.m. The Eagles (2-7) will travel to Sequoia Pathway (1-8) next Friday at 7 p.m.
