Brophy wins 10th state golf championship in dominant fashion

Brophy golf coach Jonathan Shores now has four state championships on his resume, but he'll never take one for granted.
"There's never a guarantee of a next one," Shores said Thursday afternoon. "There's so many good teams and great golfers in Arizona."
Thursday at Aguila golf course in Laveen, there was never much doubt. Led by senior Dylan Beonning, the Broncos left the field in their dust, cruising to a 21-shot victory over Perry.
It was Brophy's second title in three years and 10th overall.
Hamilton junior Joseph Nelson claimed individual honors, shooting 67 both days and edging out Beonning by one stroke.
"Obviously it would've been great for Dylan to pull it out, but he's the reason we won the team title and gave us so much momentum early on," Shores said of Nelson's performance. "But you have to give Joseph credit. It was a great battle. You're not going to win everything all the time every year, team or individual, but it was Dylan who led us to this championship."
Along with four state championships, Shores' Brophy resume includes seven state runner-up finishes.
"Sometimes its not gonna go your way, Shores admits. "That's why as a coach, I put a lot of emphasis on teaching our kids life lessons and important values that will help them beyond golf."
After Perry, Millennium, Corona del Sol and Hamilton rounded out the top five.
Individually, Perry's Ethan Butters finished in third place two strokes behind Boenning. Desert Vista's Jakob Stanley finished 4th (+1) and Sunnyslope's Jackson Pieratt was right behind Stanley at +2.
