Valley Christian girls volleyball hosted their annual Dig for a Cure game last week. Dig for a Cure is a game devoted to spreading awareness and raising money for people who suffer from breast cancer and any other kind of cancer. The money raised goes to Honor Health and the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center. This tradition was first started by Valley alumnus Megan Davies ('20) and her father, Coach Bob Davies. They started this tradition to honor Michelle Davies, Megan's mom and Coach Bob's wife, who is a breast cancer survivor.
This event was held in the Bradley gym for six years until last year, when the Varsity team hosted the event at Grand Canyon University in the Global Credit Union Arena to honor VCS alumnus, Emily Burkert ('15).
To kick of the 8th Annual Dig for a Cure, the Frosh and JV teams held a smaller event in Bradley Gym on Tuesday, October 22nd as they hosted Seton Catholic. The Valley Christian Junior High teams also joined the festivities and played their Dig for a Cure game against Gilbert Christian that same afternoon.
Between the Frosh and JV games the Trojans hosted a ceremony to honor and recognize cancer survivors or those affected by cancer by presenting them with pink leis. They also did their best to showcase the opportunity to donate to Honor Health and help the foundation to fight cancer.
All teams went undefeated in their games that night. The Frosh team won in two sets and defeated Seton Catholic. The JV team was also victorious in two sets, winning 25-15 and 27-25.
On Saturday, October 26th, the #1 ranked and undefeated Trojan varsity volleyball team had the amazing opportunity to play their Dig for a Cure Game in the Grand Canyon University Arena once again. They took on Seton Catholic Prep, who is now ranked #7 in the state heading into the state tournament, at 6 PM and were ready to face the tough competition brought by Sentinels.
Both teams were super excited for the game and the opportunity to play in the arena. Their Dig for a Cure ceremony was extra special due to the help of Coach Bob Davies and "The Dean of High School Sports", Mr. Kevin McCabe, AZ Sports Radio Broadcaster. Through this event Trojans hope to raise lots of money and awareness for cancer research.
The game was tight during the first set but the Trojans pulled ahead and won 25-21. The next two sets ended with the same score with the Trojans coming out on top 25-14 in each set.
Senior Taylor Miser said this about the game, "It was amazing to compete in the 8th Annual Dig for a Cure and continue to be undefeated in all eight years of the event."
