Seton Catholic’s Karen Self ties state record

It won't be long before Karen Self is officially Arizona's winningest girls basketball coach.
After a victory Tuesday night over region rival Apache Junction, she now shares the title with another legend in former Gilbert and Highland coach Miner Webster.
And it's just fine with Self, a 33-year coaching veteran who has also taught a variety of economics and high-level math during her career.
"I wasn't totally sure it would happen coming into the season because we have a really young team and I didn't know how many games we would win, so I didn't want to distract myself with it," Self said Tuesday night.
"But we have veterans Carmella (Gallardo) and Mia (Dipuccio) who really stepped and help the team gel. So a month or so into the season, I figured it was more than likely I just didn't know when."

Seton Catholic (13-5) will next play Friday evening at Globe. It's a legitimate road trip and Seton will be favored to win, but it won't matter when or where for Self.
"It won't be about one night or one game, it's about the journey I've been able to have with this great school and community. I love it here at Seton. I love being able to teach...and really good coaching is really good teaching."
Since 1996, Seton has reached the state championship game 29 times, winning 12.
